The Rest of the Story

It has taken me long enough, but here is the completed project that I gave you a peek at in my last post.

It has a padded exterior pocket for my phone...

I love how it turned out (if I do say so myself). Especially since I saw a similar one selling online for
$78!!!

The reason that I need a new bag was because my sister and I took a bus trip. We rode for about four hours and then we hopped onto this ferry!!!

Yes!!! We were heading to one of my FAVORITE places!!! Mackinac Island!!!!

(So bear with me because I have tons of pictures).

The purpose of our trip was to WALK THE BRIDGE!!!! I have wanted to do this for quite awhile and there is an annual walk every Labor Day.

We had an afternoon and an evening on the island.

It was a gorgeous day!

We stayed in a really nice hotel.

The hallways made me feel like I was on the Titanic!! :)

Since it was the final big weekend of the summer, the island was pretty crowded.

I actually bumped into a bike and saw the whole domino effect thing happen before my eyes!!

We walked for quite awhile after supper, taking in the sights.

The next morning we caught the 7 a.m. ferry back to the mainland and started our walk!!

It was pretty cold, but was actually comfortable for walking.

Here I am walking over those crazy grate I can't stand driving over!!

I was surprised at how fast the walk went. It only took about an hour and a half.

It was perfect for the trip across the bridge.

I didn't want a fanny pack...didn't want a back pack...and didn't want

something falling off of my shoulder.

I'm looking forward to walking again next year!!!

What's for Dinner?

My mother-in-law stopped by with a huge bag of veggies from her garden. This is a pretty common occurence each summer. Today, the yellow squash, patty-pan squash, onion, basil & bit of dill went in a pan with some chicken. It smells great! Also cooking up some fresh green beans...cucumbers in mayo sauce on the side!
This is also my first attempt at a blog post from my phone. Hopefully this works! Please bear with me!!

The Sweetest Thing

I was pulled in right from the first sentence..."I met Dobbs on the day my world fell apart." The Sweetest Thing by Elizabeth Musser was sent to me by Bethany House Publishers for review. It is written by Elizabeth Musser. I have never read anything by this author and was happy to be introduced to her work! The book takes place in Georgia during the time of the Great Depression. (I love historical fiction!!)

The book switches back and forth between the view-points of the two main characters. Mary Dobbs Dillard arrives in Atlanta to stay with her affluent Aunt & Uncle. Her family is from Chicago and is very poor, as her father is an itinerant preacher. She forms a fast friendship with Anne Perri Singleton. Anne is used to a life of affluence, but immediately hardships hit her family and this stretches the friendship of the two.

I found myself wrapped up in the lives of these characters & would welcome a sequel to this great book!! It was an enjoyable, easy read that I would recommend if you're looking for a book for what is left of your summer reading time.

Wedding Cake

This past weekend was my daughter's wedding. It was, of course, of the DIY variety! Things started to spin out of control the morning of the wedding, but eventually everything came together. I will have lots to post in order to show you all of the wedding - but let me just start with the cake!!

Here it is, start to finish:

I started off with 4 square pans and made 2 layers of each - one chocolate and one white.

Next came the buttercream. The buttercream on the sides and tops was basic vanilla, but in between the layers was either strawberry or caramel. Once the buttercream was on, the dowels were inserted for support.

Then came the fondant...lots and lots of fondant! It's really a lot easier than you would think!

Several dozen daisies made out of gum paste...I bought a powdered base, mixed it with water, rolled it out and cut it out with daisy-shaped cutters.

After stacking, I added a little ribbon and "glued" on the daisies (with powdered sugar & water "glue").

It's been awhile since I've linked to 5 Minutes for Books, but I always enjoy checking out their site.

Right now, I'm working through this stack of books:

The top book is a book that I just brought home from the library today - Motherland by Fern Schumer Chapman. It is the story of a mother who is a Holocaust survivor. After a lifetime of hiding her secrets, she takes her daughter with her back to Germany to face her past. I'm anxious to read it.
Rooftops of Tehran - by Mahbod Serji. I have read a lot about this book and I enjoyed The Kite Runner so I thought I'd check this one out as well. I'm finding that I don't always enjoy vocabulary choices even though story lines may be well written. (Enough said about that, for now.)
A New Kind of Normal - by Carol Kent. I am nearly finished with this book. I also just finished her book: When I Lay My Isaac Down. Both books are about a major change in the life of her family. I would highly recommend these books, so I don't want to give too much away. Let me just say that her life changed to a "new normal" overnight. She came to a crossroads of trusting God or walking away. She found hope when she felt like giving up.
While We're Far Apart - by Lynn Austin. This is another book that I brought home from the library today. I always enjoy reading Lynn Austin. This is a new one from her; I haven't heard much about it but I'm looking forward to reading it!

Finally, Authentic Faith - by Gary Thomas is on my stack to read this month. Gary Thomas is by far my favorite author (non-fiction). He has such a great ability to take lots of material and condense it into one thought provoking line. I have read and re-read all of his books. I'd encourage you to check him out. The sub title for this book is: The Power of a Fire-Tested Life. Then, the question "What if life isn't meant to be perfect but we are meant to trust the One who is?" is written across the bottom. I chose this book for a new book discussion group that I am forming with some friends. So far there are 4 or 5 of us who will be reading and discussing this book. The plan is to read a book every month or two and get together for some disccussion.

So, that's enough to keep me busy for awhile!!

Connecticut Trip

On June 8th, my husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary.

I'm not sure where the time went, it sure doesn't seem like that long.

It's been a great 25 years...looking forward to 25 more!!

The last week of August we took a trip to CT to celebrate!!

We took in some great scenery, viewed several historic sites and enjoyed some relaxation.

We spent quite a bit of time at the Mystic Noank Library (taking advantage of their free wireless!!) It was a great old library with lots of character.

Basement Renovation

Today I’m linking up to Today’s Creative Blog – Get Your Craft On. There are so many crafty ideas there. I never have time to make it through all the links, but it's a great place for inspiration!!

I’ll take care of the “crafty” part right away in this post. The rest is a reveal! We’ve been working on our basement all summer. I call it a “faux” finish, because it’s not a total finish…(not doing the ceilings and a few other things, yet). It started with these materials for curtains (LOTS of curtains):

The leftover material became a pillow for the crib (for when grandson visits!). I copied a picture onto transfer paper and ironed it onto the white. I’ve wanted to make something with a picture on it and was pleased with how easy it was to work with the transfer paper! I purchased mine at Wal-Mart. The main area of the basement, BEFORE:

There’s still some work to do…painting the stairway, putting a few things up on the walls, repainting and redoing the bedroom and putting in the kitchenette area. It’s getting there and I’m loving it!!!

Cabinet Re-Do

This morning I spent some time looking through some of the Frugal Friday Posts at The Shabby Nest. Lots of great ideas and fun things to look at…so I decided to link up and share the re-do of one of my favorite frugal finds!!!

About 15 years ago my husband stumbled upon this HUGE cabinet. He was reading electrical meters at the time & spotted this buried under hay in an old barn. The owners parted with it for a mere $20. For years it stored canned goods and just sat as we found it…kind of a dirty white.

I’ve always wanted to do something with it, but was afraid to attempt it. Let me just say…if that’s you, DO IT!!!! APPLY THE PAINT!!!!!!

I LOVE it in black! Also, I removed the hodge-podge of stuff and am now displaying the dishes that my daughter bought at a garage sale for $10!!!

Aren’t they pretty? I’m so glad that we bought them. We stood there for awhile debating. What in the world was the debate about? $10??? Goodness!!

I love my nook!

A few weeks ago I purchased a Nook e-reader from Barnes & Noble.

I have used it non-stop ever since. Well, not quite, but almost!!

I chose the Nook over other brands mainly because it is compatable with what our library uses for checking out e-books (the Kindle is not). Since I work at the library, I wanted to take advantage of ebooks our library offers. I've also been able to get quite a few deals on ebooks, some even free. I purchased a NASV of the Bible for $2.79 and have used it during church and even have done some highlighting and notetaking right on the Nook!!

On our recent trip to CT I listened to an audio book that I had loaded onto my Nook.

I have actually put several audiobooks on a mini-SD card and can then listen to those books on either my Nook or my netbook.

Travelling with the Nook was great & it's nice to have lots of books in one location - just pick up and go...However; I don't imagine that I will ever give up the old standard...there's just something about the experience of reading through the actual "hard copy!"

Stating the Obvious

I think that it goes without saying, that I have been taking a break from blogging for awhile. I will continue with that break for the time being. Not sure when I'll be back, but I'm trying to focus on several other areas of my life right now. Hopefully I'll be back - refreshed & ready to go - at some point!

This is a book that I will have my college-aged son read this summer. It is super practical and very motivating.

Morning Coffee & Two Giveaways!!

This morning, I not only am having some coffee, but I was ambitious enough to make Pioneer Woman's Cinnamon rolls!!!

They are AMAZING, of course, as are all of her recipes!

This blog is a "catch-up" as I have two books to share with you that I should have posted last week...but that is another story.

The first book: Mother - Daughter Duet: Getting to the Relationship You Want with Your Adult Daughter. This book caught my eye because I have two adult daughters. It is my desire to have a sweet relationship with them.

Cheri Fuller, along with her daughter Ali Plum, use lots of personal stories along with the wisdom of experience in describing what the mother-daughter duet should look like. Having the insight and perspective of the daughter certainly is a benefit!
After discussing such topics as Respect and Belief, Communication, Connecting and Bonding, Now that she's a Mom, When Crisis Arise, each chapter has a section entitled "A Daughter's Perspective." I highly recommend this book! I must say that I have enjoyed transitioning to this stage of mothering two very beautiful adult daughters.

The second book is: Dancing with My Father by Sally Clarkson. I have been a fan of Sally Clarkson and have read some of her previous books, so I was excited to be able to read her latest. The sub-title for this book is: How God Leads Us into a Life of Grace and Joy. Sally wrote this book after a time of noticing a lack of joy in her life. It's very easy for us, especially as women, to become overloaded with "busyness." She describes for us how we can take the time to live in beauty, grace, joy and peace. I love the title of Chapter 9: "Exchanging the Drudgery of Duty for the Dance of Delight." Sally's writing reflects her heart and she shares so much of her life with her readers. She comes across as someone who has been there and understands.

I know that I will be returning to both of these books again and again. They are both packed with practical advice and wisdom.

28 Day Organizing Challenge

Today, I'm linking to OrgJunkies 28 Day Challenge. Because I was away unexpectedly for a week this month, I put aside my hopes of accomplishing a large area and settled for working on some kitchen drawers. Here's the silverware drawer before:

My inspiration for this drawer was the two silverware trays that I purchased at IKEA for only 99 cents each!!
Then I moved on to the junk drawer. It was SERIOUSLY, a bunch of JUNK!

Afterwards, it became the towel, hot pad drawer. Again...IKEA!! I purchased some of their wonderful towels...49 cents each. It feels great to have some new, clean towels!!!

The challenge comes with 5 questions...So here we go...

1. What was the hardest part of the challenge for you and were you able to overcome it?

I'd have to say that just getting started was the hardest part. I had wanted to go BIG and get a lot accomplished in my bedroom, but when I knew that was not going to happen I pretty much wanted to sit back and do nothing. I'm glad that I DID attack something, if only 2 small drawers!! (See my last blog post)

2. Tell us what kind of changes, habits you have put into place in order for your area/room to maintain its new order?

I'm trying to be more aware of putting things away and not TOSSING things away! Actually, my theory is that I am finally getting things in order and now that my kids have all moved on, things will stay that way. (We'll see how long that theory holds!)

3. What did you do with your "stuff" you were able to purge out of your newly organized space?

I had three bags...one bag got thrown away (this was most of the stuff!), another went to goodwill, and the third I am going through piece by piece and finding new homes. (Some of that will eventually get thrown too).

4. What creative storage solutions were you able to introduce in order to create additional spaces as well as establish some limits and boundaries?

Nothing too creative here...just a few inexpensive new items to inspire!! (And lots of tossing!!!)

5. Why do you think you should win this challenge?

Well, I'm not too sure about that, but I am glad that I did accomplish something even though I had to give up larger goals. I'm so glad though, that I was able to get away and help out some friends...so worth the time away...my bedroom will still get finished at a later time. Switching to smaller areas instead of focusing on a large area helped me to see my home in more manageable chunks. I'll accomplish order in the bedroom through tackling one small area at a time!!!

This Week...

There has been plenty of activity since my last blog post. The week has absolutely flown by. It began with another trip to Northland for my daughter's final home game of her basketball career.

Then we headed to Minneapolis to help out our good friends. Jason recently spent 23 days in the hospital with a life-threatening abscess. We are so thankful that he is recovering!

We enjoyed their kids!!

We were able to get some work done around the house.
This was a fun project...a chalkboard on the kitchen wall!!!

It turned out great. Beth is going to be putting a border around it and I can't wait to see it finished!

We couldn't go to Minneapolis without stopping in at IKEA!!
We found some useful items and some good deals and ended up spending less than $40!!!
Not bad at all.

Today I spent some time working on my organizing for the 28 Day Organizing Challenge. Due to our unexpected trip out of state, I've had to change my organizing up a bit. I'm now working on several small spaces instead of a major room project. Pics will be coming, soon!

Road Trip!!

Today, my husband and I will be taking off for Minneapolis!! We are going to help out some very dear friends of ours. The husband just spent the past 3 weeks in the hospital fighting a very serious infection. He had three surgeries and now is slowly recovering. He and his wife also had their fourth child 8 weeks ago (the other three are 2, 4, & 6). They both just need to rest. So, I'm going to kick the mom/grandma mode into high gear...and I'm off!!!!!

My Week in Pictures

Welcome Company Girls!! I'm looking forward to making the rounds and seeing how all of you did this week. I have to admit...my week was pretty routine. I tried to get some of the "small things" from Home Sanctuary
accomplished.

Sunday, of course, started out with church. The furnace was not working in the auditorium, so we all went into the gym and had church there. It made things a bit more laid back and we changed up the schedule some, but it still was a blessing and a good time of being together.

On Monday, we headed up to NIU for my daughter's basketball game. Unfortunately, they did not win, but it was a great game!!

On Tuesday I headed in to the library for work. This is behind the circ desk (where I spend most of my time).

Then we made some cute clothes for some paper dolls. (It's a tough job!)

On Wednesday I was back at the library for most of the day.

On Thursday I was back at the library for ALL of the day.

And today, I will head back to the library for the evening!!!

That pretty much wraps up the week!!

I worked a bit more than usual so I wasn't able to accomplish much around the house.

Working on organizing, purging and simplifying is still high priority around here.

Soon, VERY soon, I am planning on posting some pictures of what I plan on working on for ORG JUNKIES 28 Day Organizing Challenge. I've taken the pictures already. They're not very pretty & definitely embarrassing, but perfect for this challenge!!

I'm sorry!!

I keep changing the layout of my blog...I think I've gone through 3 in the past 2 weeks.

It's just that I can't seem to find "it." You know what I mean???

AND...just what is CRANBERRY COTTAGE?? It doesn't really give anyone a clue as to what this blog is about. Let me explain - several years ago when I began my soap-making business I struggled with a name for it and somehow along the line came up with Cranberry Cottage (I do have several Cranberry scents.) The blog came along with the soap-making, which made "Cranberry Cottage" seem appropriate. The soap business is on the back burner for the time-being, although I still have a bit in my etsy shop. So..that's the story there.

This week was a wonderful week spent enjoying the Woman Inspired Conference on Creativity. Please go to their site and check out all that they have to offer! You won't regret it!!

Getting Organized

This past week I have been seriously following along with Rachel Anne at Home Sanctuary. The tasks have been small and easy to accomplish, but the fact of the matter is that I AM accomplishing something!!! I love her thoughts on making our home our sanctuary, and this includes beauty, peace, and order. This week, during my minimum maintenance routine, I did some "ordering" behind closed doors. It's always easy for me to shut a door and forget about it - "Out of sight, out of mind." I must say, that in my mind, this small task not only brought some order, but also a measure of peace and beauty to me!!!

I just so happened upon a reading challenge that utilizes the local library. WELL... here is a picture of the library that is just two blocks from my house. I have to say, it is a very nice library for our small town. I should know, I work there!!

For the past week I have been looking through blogs and articles, eagerly reading what others have planned for the new year. While I have not set any specific new year's resolutions, I am looking forward to this year as a year of growth...in many areas. I'd have to say that I plan to work most on ...or change the most... in the following three area (not in any particular order!!)

One of the blogs that I happened upon was Home Sanctuary. Each day Rachel posts "Today's Small Thing." The "small thing" is designed to help us make our home a sanctuary. They may be small things, but every small thing adds up!! Literally, too...because Rachel assigns points to each small thing and then points are tallied, sent in, and prizes are given at the end of each month. So far I've been able to accomplish each task given and I look forward to finding out what the task of the day will be! I know that this site will be a great help to me in getting the little things accomplished rather than putting them off...again and again!! I look forward to making my home more of a Sanctuary in 2010!

Bethany House Publishers sent me a free copy of "Closer" by Jim and Cathy Burns for review. The sub-title is Devotions to Draw Couples Together. After reading through this book, I will have to say that 2010 will be a year of working on my marriage. I look forward to going through this book with my husband. The Burns admit that they have tried just about every devotional and have not been disciplined enough to keep at it. I'm sure that's the case for most of us. Their book offers 52 chapters - each chapter is just a few pages long. So, there's enough to focus on just one short chapter per week for a year! At the end of each chapter is a section called "Faith Conversations." These conversations are three questions or statements to draw out conversation. After the "Faith Conversations," the chapters conclude with a section called "A Step Closer." This section requires more involvement, such as writing out the story of your relationship, setting goals, brainstorming date ideas, listing weakness of your marriage, etc. The chapters are short, yet packed with so much to think about and many ideas to implement into one's marriage. Very, very practical and doable. I, for one, am looking forward to going through this book with my husband this year.Last, but perhaps not least...it's the dreaded thinking about how to get in shape/lose that weight in the coming new year. "The One Day Way" was provided to me for review by the Waterbrook-Multnomah Publishing Group. The premise of the book is to keep it simple, nothing complicated, expensive or temporary. The author, Chantel Hobbs, encourages you to keep your focus on today and today only. Personally, I felt that Chantel took a lot of time laying the foundation (the "how to think" part) of the book. But once I get farther along in actually working my way through this in actuality, I think I may find that I will need to go back and reread the beginning sections for motivation. (She's been there, done that, and most likely knows what she's talking about!) I have to say that the section on meal plans was fabulous! The foods are simple, easy to obtain, easy to make - they look like something I could stick with. There's a great section on strength-training workouts along with pictures. I highly recommend this book and expect it to be my constant companion throughout the coming year! You can purchase the book here.

This past weekend I FINALLY pulled out some Christmas decor and spruced up the house just a bit. It doesn't seem like it should be Christmas time already and I'm having a hard time getting prepared!!

Today we had quite a bit of snowfall...

While the snow fell, I hunkered down inside and got serious about some baking!

I found the recipe for these cookies here. They looked delicious, so I had to give them a try.

I'm not really sure what this is, but it has lots of caramel, chocolate and white chocolate. Looks edible!!

I'm looking forward to the kids coming home from college this weekend and we're going to do some serious shopping...yes, I'm THAT far behind!!

Aaahhhh! I have not been keeping up with this blog as I would like...

Since I started working this summer I cannot seem to accomplish as much as I would like, go figure! However, I have been doing a TON of reading (hmmm...my new job is at the library). I have read nearly 50 books in the past 5 months. I received two books from Waterbrook Multnomah to review.

More Than A Match by Michael and Amy Smalley is an excellent read for any couple considering marriage. The Smalleys use many illustrations and stories from their own experiences. They are very straight forward and the reading is enjoyable. Beginning with 5 keys to compatibility, the authors move through several pertinent topics such as what to look for in a guy/girl, how to handle a relationship that is not working out, and a lot of time is spent addressing the physical relationship. There is also a section on divorce risk factors. At the end of each chapter, questions are given that provide a good review of what has been written. Because of their candor and easy style of writing, I believe that this book would be very appealing to young couples and I highly recommend it! If you know of an engaged or dating couple, perhaps you'd like to consider this for a Christmas gift!

The second book is 99 Ways to stretch Your Home Budget by Cheri Gillard. This is a handy book to have! Just as the title suggests, Gillard lists 99 money stretching ideas. Idea #1 is as simple as meal planning. Each idea comes with a paragraph or two of explanation ending with how much money could be saved per week/year. I must say though, that I didn't come across any major "aha" ideas. These were pretty much your standard budget stretching ideas. However, I plan on checking back with the book from time to time just as a reminder and to make sure that I'm keeping my budget in check! Waterbrook Multnomah offers a lot more "99 Ways" books. Whenever I am on vacation and I find myself checking out the "tourist-trap shops," I always gravitate toward the mugs. I'm not really sure why, but there is just something about sitting down in the morning with a great cup of coffee with a mug from a favorite place. Each one has been carefully chosen...not only does it have to look right, it has to "feel" right, too. These are a few of my favorites!!

Levi's Will - A Review

I had a scare when trying to log into my blog. Blogger said that the blog did not exist and that the name was available. Yikes!! Fortunately, it appeared as usual with my second attempt.

Today I would like to share a book with you that was provided to

me for review by Bethany House Publishers.

Levi's Will was an excellent read. Spanning 40 years, the book tells the story of Will, an Amish boy, who leaves behind his Amish life (including his pregnant Amish girlfriend). Keeping his past a secret, he enters WWII as a soldier, marries, and begins a new life. Levi believes that he can move forward; however, he begins to discover that he desperately desires his father's love and forgiveness. Will patiently seeks his father's forgiveness over a span of 30 years. During that time will is learning much about fatherhood as he raises two boys of his own. The author, W. Dale Cramer, sums up much of the book in one simple sentence 2/3 of the way into the book. "...every man's failure dips its roots into the previous generation and drops its seeds into the next." Levi's Will is the story of one man's realization of how that truth is working out in his own life.

The story line switches back and forth between different time periods, which at first seemed as if it would cause some confusion. I must admit that after reading a section in one time period, I was anxious to get back to the previous period to see how Will was faring there. Will is not a perfect character; he made poor choices many times. The author shows that God doesn't always work in the way we think He should and that there are consequences along with our choices. I will be looking for other books penned by W. Dale Cramer.

I so often wish that I had more time to read! I'm working on a journal so that I can keep track of the books that I actually do finish! What books are your favorites?

Mackinac Island - Take 3!!

Two weeks ago, I went to Mackinac Island with my mom and a group of friends. (This was my third trip in just over a year!!) This time we actually stayed at the Grand Hotel. Our stay there included dinner and breakfast in their fabulous dining room, along with a concert by Legacy Five.

It was cold and rainy on our trip to the Island, but cleared up somewhat once we got there. It's a bit different visiting the island in October as opposed to June & July. Most boats have left the marina and the streets are a lot quieter.

The next two pictures are of the view from the balcony off of our room.

If you've never been to Mackinac, I highly recommend it! It's such a change of pace and so beautiful.

Fast and Frugal Cookbook

Recently I signed on to become a book reviewer with two publishers. It's a great way to receive new books and satisfy my desire to read! Then, I have the privilege of sharing my thoughts with others. (Don't we ALL want other people to know what we think!)

The first book that I received is "Busy People's Fast & Frugal Cookbook" by Dawn Hall, published by Thomas Nelson. The following is my review:

I was excited to receive Dawn Hall’s Fast & Frugal Cookbook. In her introduction she explains her thoughts on making choices regarding ingredient cost. It’s not always best to use the cheapest ingredients. There is a great cost benefit in making healthy choices. Most of us know though, that the grocery budget can only be stretched so far and Dawn gives some great tips to help with that.
The book is divided into nine sections. At the beginning of each section, each recipe is indexed along with the amount of time needed to prepare it. In the sidebar of each page is a convenient listing of all supplies needed for each recipe as well as a detailed grocery list. Nearly every recipe comes with a “Helpful Hint.” These hints give ideas for substitutions, money saving ideas & practical cooking tips.
The recipes themselves are simple, comfort food type recipes. (I would have liked more chicken recipes - there seemed to be an emphasis on ham.) There are many pictures, but not quite enough for me. The book ends with a very detailed index making each recipe easy to find. I’m looking forward to cooking my way through this new cookbook!

Here's a fun and simple idea for a great birthday gift. I made this one for my grandson. Start with an ordinary wooden puzzle and cut out pictures and glue them into the spaces. Hopefully this will help Lincoln remember us when we are apart!He had his own creative ideas for the puzzle pieces!

Spiritual Mothering - Chapter 1

The Simple Wife is having a discussion on the book Spiritual Mothering by Susan Hunt. I have owned this book for several years and have read it many times. It's one of those books that I like to frequently reread. I have found myself in different seasons of life during these rereads and am anxious to read through the thoughts of the various women who will be posting.

The following questions were given:

1. Susan Hunt defines spiritual mothering as this: "When a woman possessing faith and spiritual maturity enters into a nurturing relationship with a younger woman in order to encourage and equip her to live for God's glory." What stands out to you in this definition? Why? Does this seem different from a typical mentoring definition? Why, or why not? What stands out to me are the three words at the end - for God's glory. Those words are what make the difference in all that we do. So often we want quick and easy answers to our problems, a simpler life, happiness, etc., but our focus often needs to be redirected back to God's glory. We need less of "What's in it for me?" and more of "How can I bring glory to God?"
2. Beginning on page 18, Hunt talks about our need for mothering. How do you see this need among women you know? In your own life? In my own life I have been blessed to have been raised by a godly mother who has taught me a lot. Also, I am part of a close-knit church where the women share their lives with each other. This close contact has taught me many valuable lessons. We've had some dear elderly ladies who have been great examples to our whole church body. Unfortunately, many women do not see the need in their own lives or value the life experience of older women.
3. What's something that you underlined, highlighted, circled, starred, or drew arrows to in this chapter? Why did it stand out to you?
My attention was drawn to the portion under the heading "Our Capacity for Mothering." The author stated: "As a woman's growing desire to imitate God produces obedience to His Word, she develops mothering characteristics. Our femaleness gives us the capacity for mothering; our faith produces certain characteristics of mothering." These characteristics are such things as compassion, sacrifice, and desire to nurture. Interestingly, when a woman grows in her relationship with the Lord, the overflow of that is a growth in her relationship with others. (We are not an island!)

Fall Fun!

This week I spent a few days visiting my mom. We did some of the "touristy" things in my home-town. Northeastern Wisconsin has been having some amazing weather this fall. The sky has been clear and blue and the temps have been in the mid to upper 70s.

We toured the Botanical Gardens. If you have a garden near you, I would recommend that you go for a visit. It was gorgeous. (Tip: The Green Bay gardens are FREE to tour on Wednesdays!!)
This is my mom. She is pretty amazing (but that's another story). We had a great time.

Mr. McGregor lives in Green Bay!! :)

Summer is Over!!

I am ready to enter the blogging world again. The summer was great fun and went by so quickly. It was nice to have ALL of my family home for the summer (grandson & all!!) We had so much fun.

Lots of work too, though. The kids were all busy working several jobs. I even got a part-time job at the local library! We worked together and cranked out eight craft shows. (Lots of busy weekends!!) For one of them we were able to take another trip to Mackinac Island. I love it there and am looking forward to another quick trip there this fall with my mom.

Summer ended with my oldest daughter and her family heading back on the road with Bible Revival Ministries. Three days later our nest was empty as my other two went off to college. It's been very different around here with a quiet house, but I'm looking forward to getting back into teaching a Ladies' Sunday School class & working with the children's groups on Wednesday nights. My new job is keeping some of my time filled and I'll be doing the pre-school story time at the library as well as regular library responsibilities...should be fun!

While I've been away I have kept up on some of my favorite blogs and have lots of ideas swirling in my head! I'm getting adjusted to my new schedule & plan to keep this blog updated!!

I had more pictures to share with you but blogger isn't letting me put them where I want right now. So...I'll end this short and be back shortly!!

Summer

Where is the summer going?? Just a blink and it's half over. So, what have I been up to?...

A craft show every weekend (for 8 weeks). Not only does this make every weekend hectic, but I need to be working during the week to restock!!

One of the shows was in Mackinaw City - so we were able to spend a few extra days there and also on Mackinac Island. We looked for a show there because we enjoyed it so much last year.

This little guy and his mom & dad are spending the summer with us. He takes up lots of my time. I guess I have replaced blogging time with time for him & I'm not missing the blog world as much as I thought I would (for now!!) I'll be back in the fall!

I've been going through the book, Bloom Before You're Planted, by Lizabeth Duckworth. (Check out the online study here.) The other morning I spent some time out on the deck reading, praying & thinking. It was quiet - except for lots of bird music :) The chapter on Peace was very good and I'll need to spend some time putting some ideas into practice. Lizbeth gave three practical ideas for nurturing peace:

choose to manage your external world - In order to do this, I am attempting to de-clutter my home. I know that I will feel more at peace internally if things are simplified.
make room for rest - The idea of rest always appeals to me!! :) Really, though...I need to plan for "constructive" rest. Reading, praying, relaxing, thinking and planning are things that cannot be pushed off time and time again. I need to carve out some time to plan for productive rest.

cultivate mindfulness - This idea was explained as "not allowing your mind to be so full of to-do lists and inner dialogue that you lose track of your actions."

I'm looking forward to putting these three practical ideas into practice. They are not new & novel ideas, but ones that I need to be reminded of and remember to be mindful of!!

Rhubarb Crisp

Remember the rhubarb that was popping up not that long ago??? Well, it has grown ever so quickly and we were able to eat some of it today!!I'll share the recipe with you. It was delicious!!!

1 c. firmly packed brown sugar

1 c. flour

3/4 c. quick cooking rolled oats

1/2/ c. melted butter

1 tsp. cinnamon

Combine the above and mix together until crumbly.

Press half of the mixture into a buttered 8-inch square baking dish.

Top with 4 c. sliced rhubarb.

In a saucepan combine:

1 c. granulated sugar

2 tbsp. cornstarch

1 c. water

1 tsp. vanilla

Cook until clear, then pour over rhubarb.

Top rhubarb with remaining crumb mixture and bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes.

This is what my soaps will look like this season. I like the small splash of extra color. Starting in June I have a craft show planned nearly every weekend throughout the summer.

I have several bins of soaps to wrap...I'd better get at it.

What's On Your Nightstand - April

Today I am joinging in with 5 Minutes for Books to show you "what's on my nightstand." I always have several books going & right now I'm in the midst of some pretty good ones!

Sorry, no fiction right now...I just finished up a couple of those.

"The House That Cleans Itself" - is a book I've been working on for awhile. I am in the process of decluttering, purging & making everthing work towards cleanliness in my house!

"Bloom Before You're Planted" - I've just started skimming and will begin reading it in earnest this week. It is the book that will be used for an online study. Check it out here.

"Beauty by God" - is written by Shelly Balestero who was one of the speakers at the Woman Inspired Online Conference. It's a great book with lots of practical information.

"Clutter-Free Christianity" - I decided to get after I had heard some great recommendations on it. Since I'm decluttering my home...might as well work on the spiritual life as well. The book is about cutting through the clutter in order to get to the heart of what it means to please God and be like Christ in action & attitude. So far it's been a great read.

"What He Must Be" - by Voddie Baucham...I just bought that yesterday, but am about half way through. It is about what a man must be in order to marry my daughter. Very good book!! It covers so well what it really means to be a Christian & a leader. Excellent when helping your daughters make wise choices, but equally sobering when considering how to help train your sons in becoming that man.

I Found Something Beautiful!

Yesterday I stood outside on our back deck and took a look around me. Spring is not the prettiest sight in northern Wisconsin. It's almost depressing at times if you just take in the big picture. This morning I stopped by the Inspired Room. She challenged us to capture special moments and find or create something beautiful. This post made me stop and realize that there was some beauty out there...I just needed to find it!! This afternoon I spent some time removing leaves and winter debris from the flower gardens and found that the lilies are coming in nicely...
...so is the rhubarb (yum!)...

...and the daffodils are doing great!!

I feel sooo much better about it all now!! :) To top it off, it was over 70 degrees here today!!

A Woman Inspired Online Conference

Attending the Woman Inspired Online Conference last week was a HUGE blessing. A New Era

In just a few short weeks it will be the beginning of a new era for me. My youngest will be graduating from high school and is making preparations to head off to college. My second child is currently in Bible college. She will hopefully be finishing up next year. My oldest daughter is now a mommy. She and her husband travel with Bible Revival Ministries. So...all of my babies will be grown up & out of the house (well...except for this summer when everyone will be home...and every weekend when the younger two come home from college). ANYWAY...after seventeen (yes, 17) years of homeschooling I am excited, fearful, and wondering what in the world I will do with all of my time. I don't want to waste my time. I want to grow in my relationship with the Lord and be a servant for Him. I don't want to jump into anything too quickly, yet I want to be available. I'm praying that the Lord will direct me and help me to use my time wisely. There are so many opportunities in our church, community and even in the blogging world. I know that it would be easy to just hibernate for awhile and play "woe is me - my nest is empty," but I have raised my children to do what they are doing. It is very fulfilling to see them each grow and mature. Exciting days are ahead!!!

I just want my heart to be in the right place.

I just received an email from The Nester telling me that I have won a ticket to the Woman Inspired Online Coference. I won't go into the whole story here, but I actually prayed about entering her giveaway and am so glad that I did! The Lord has blessed me this month...the trip to Florida was practically given to me & now this. :) I am definitely at a place where I need to be inspired and renewed and the Lord is working that out in my life!!

Home Again

I've been home for 3 days now, and can't seem to get out of "vacation" mode. It was a wonderful time, and of course, too short!! It's time to switch gears now and accomplish some things. I'm hoping to spend some time on my etsy shop and add some new items. But, major amounts of spring cleaning need to take place here...

Ten Years Later!!!

We have lived in our current house for ten years. Several of the windows have been a bother to me the WHOLE time!! The living room window has looked like this...

The blinds were horrible and I never could get them open or shut without a major fight. I was unsure as to what I wanted there, so never gave it much thought and just did nothing. I have been inspired by several blogs and decided that it was time to stop fighting with the shades and add some warmth and color to this room!

This is what I came up with. I'm debating going back to the fabric store and getting more material to add just a bit of length to the bottom, but for now, it works. It makes the room seem much cozier to me. I don't know why I didn't do it before.

I'm reading through the book "The House that Cleans Itself." It has gotten me motivated to declutter. I've gotten rid of BAGS of STUFF! I'm anxious to work my way throughout my whole house and purge; hopefully making upkeep and cleaning easier. Have any of you read it? If so, I'd love to hear how it helped you out.

A New Tote!!

A week or so ago I bought some cloth napkins on clearance - $1.00 for a set of two!!I did a little piece work with three sets... ...and ended up with this!!
It's lined, with two pockets inside & I also made a little zippered pouch to throw inside.
Maybe some day when I'm REAL ambitious I'll have some of these tote bag sets in my etsy shop.
I needed a new bag...because I'm going to Orlando in March!!! I am very excited! The -45 wind chill today is making it hard to wait!! :)

I was thinking the other day about some of my favorite things. (I think that I was inspired by the start of another year) I absolutely love scented items, which is reflected in many of the things I make. So...this week I listed some of my very favorites in my etsy shop.

First of all, like I said, I love fragrances. I love to have great smells in my home. My room/linen sprays are great & the fragrances linger for a long time.

Another of my "favorites" is clean sheets...especially sheets right off of the clothes line. We've had record breaking snows here in Wisconsin this winter, so not much has come off the line lately, but I did just wash sheets in my Lavender Laundry Soap and they smell great!!! Fresh Linen is actually my favorite, but Lavender is so nice for sheets.

A winter-time favorite for me is a long bath nearly every night. I love to use my cupcake bath bombs. They make my skin feel soft and are just plain fun to use!

Christmas is coming...ready or not.

Some things are turning out well. I finally put up my Christmas village. It's been several years since I've had it up. I'm not sure why.

Unfortunately, however, my pointsetta got taken down to the church for the Christmas concert and was forgotten there. Apparently it was too cold for it. What a bummer.This is how it looks at the back door...constantly. But I guess that is OK...The reason it looks like this is because this is what it looks like outside...It's very pretty and a Christmas Wonderland...but I think we have enough for awhile. :)

Christmas!!

The Christmas tree went up today!! There are two Rubbermaid totes of decorations sitting in the living room & the plan is to get everything decorated tomorrow!! Then, I will begin in earnest with some holiday cooking, baking, etc. My new grandson will be here in a week & we will be having Christmas with him & his parents then, so I only have a few days to get ready!!!! Tomorrow should be a great day to stay in and accomplish much. We are expecting anywhere from 6-12 inches of snow here in WI tomorrow. I'm not too excited about that, but it will make for a pretty Christmas!

My swap package for the Vintage Christmas swap has been sent. (I will post pictures when I am sure that Debbie has received it). I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my package from her.

My first grandchild arrived on November 3rd!!! Mom (my daughter) & baby are doing great!

I just returned from spending a week with them. He is so sweet and a very good baby, too!!

Now it's time to prepare for the fast approaching holidays!!!

Just dropping in...something I haven't done in quite some time! It seems that fall just blew by here...the days are still nice and warm, but the leaves all changed and fell so fast that I don't even have any pictures. Well, I have a few that are actually outdoors shots of my son for his Senior pics. He made me promise that I would not be circulating any of those online. Don't know how long I can keep that promise!! ;)

This is a recent picture of my nephew's baby girl. She is a doll. I just got a call from my daughter & the doctor says that she is ready to deliver any time now!! So, I'm doing some packing and looking forward to heading out to MI!!!

A few weeks ago I happened upon a huge rummage sale, with lots of "junk" to sift through. In a very nasty garage I found a stack of old magazines. They date from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Some are from the U.S., some from Sweden & France. One is from London, England during the time of WWI. The graphics are so fun!! The ads are hilarious and the prices are amazing...$750 for a new car! The articles are interesting...one of them is all about how to add fat to your diet if you need to gain weight - my, how times have changed!! :)

I'm not sure what exactly I will be doing with these, but they have already given me hours of entertainment!

Cranfest

I got back from Cranfest in Warrens, WI late last night. It is an unbelievable event, with 1,400 food, flea market & craft vendors. I met some great people and had a really fun time.

My daughter and mother-in-law went with me and were a huge help!

We spent a good amount of time on Thursday setting up.

There was some great food...too much to choose from!

The whole town (population around 400, normally) was transformed into a shanty-town of sorts. This is what is looked like arriving each morning.

The mornings were a bit early for my daughter and she took advantage of the slow times!!

One of the highlights of the weekend was seeing my long lost college roommate/best friend. It's been a few years since we were able to see each other.

I had been hoping to get some items listed in my etsy shop this fall. It has been woefully neglected. BUT...in two weeks I will be a vendor at Warrens Cranfest. I've been spending every day...all day...preparing for it. So...here's a peek... Here is some of my new soap - Clean Fun. It's clean. It's fun!!! (The smell reminds me of Skittles)

These are (like they say) Solid Bath Oils. They are made with cocoa butter and sweet almond oil & scented with Snickerdoodle fragrance oil. Just one little bath melt and your skin feels super soft!!

The laundry soap has been a success this season. I need to make lots and lots more of it. I began using the name "Grandma's Laundry Soap" conjuring up images of some elderly woman fashioning her soap & hanging her laundry on the line...Hmmm...

In 9 weeks, I, myself, will be a grandma. Prepare yourselves for pictures!
I found these cute molds at a garage sale a week or so ago. They make great soaps!!
Still cranking out the cupcake bath bombs. The problem is, my daughter and I feel the need to run a test drive on them approximately once a night.
The dining room table will hopefully be useful for meals again, shortly!!

Once this sale is over, I WILL be dumping everything left into my etsy store!!

A Trip to Mackinac

This past week my family and I were able to spend some time in Mackinaw City & on Mackinac Island. What a fun, relaxing time enjoying the gorgeous sights. The flowers on the island were unbelievable!!! So, so pretty.
We did lots and lots of walking. As we walked, what should I see, but a yard sale!!! A yard sale on Mackinac Island??? It was awesome...lots of wicker furniture, etc. The problem was, how to get anything off of the island. (Not to mention getting it home in the tiny car that we were in.)I settled on this one enamelware pan. When I asked how much it was, the answer was, "Those were all a dime." THOSE, ALL???? That implied that there were more at one time. I snatched the one and only that I could find. So does anyone know anything about Lisk enamelware?
On our final day there, my kids were able to go parasailing. It was a great trip, lots of fun, very relaxing!!!

Well, Here's Something Interesting

It has been awhile...three weeks to be exact. I have been struggling with what to post on here and feeling that there really isn't anything to say. I've been busy, I've been tired, I've been running around doing the basics, I made a quick trip to Tennessee for a wedding...ANYWAY - today I made some sourdough starter!!Soon I will be making bread, rolls, cinnamon rolls...who knows what all? I got this recipe from a good friend of mine and actually tasted the rolls while in Tennessee. They were delicious. I will let you know how this experiment goes.

I am joining in the "Shades of Inspiration" challenge. I just happened to have a few white things that I wanted to share anyway...so here goes...

Here are some clematis that are growing in the back yard. This is the second year that I have had this plant and one other. (I added three more in this year). I could swear that these were purple last year, but here they are blooming like crazy and all white this year. Hmmmm??

Today my husband came home, opened the back of the van and said, "Come look at this." This picture is while the vanity is still in the van. Looks promising. All the drawers are there, just haven't had the time to put it all together yet. Any ideas for this?The mirrow is very neat, I just couldn't get it into a place for a decent picture.

Lilies coming up by the white bedframe.This is what is sitting on the windowsill above my kitchen sink. The flower is what my daughter wore at my neice's wedding back in December. The rose was HUGE!!! :)

I have been delinquent in posting. I am still having computer problems. Once everything was up and running again, the computer lost the DVD drive. I got that fixed...lost more photos in the process and was running along smoothly for, oh...2 days. Now the DVD drive is missing again and doesn't recognize any CDs. Aaaargghhhh! I use a CD for graphics for all of my soap/craft business. Anyone have these problems with VISTA???
My son-in-law also assured me that this new computer would be super fast, I would be amazed...well, ummm...not so much.

*vista - a view extending into the distance but bounded, e.g. by headlands or rows of trees; a mental view into the distant past or future. (I definitely can view myself mental in the future!!)

Cruising Along

...So, I'm cruising along on the way to recovery...I'm getting the hang of the new computer...we got a hard drive enclosure, and I was able to recover all of my old pictures and documents!!!!! I decided to bring my camera to church last Wednesday to take pictures/videos for a DVD that I'm making for the closing program for our Wednesday night kid's club. ANYWAY...I dropped my camera and it is no longer working. Electronics!!! What a bother! So, it's off to town (we live an hour from any civilization) this weekend to do some rummaging with my mom & sister, AND to look for a new camera. Hopefully when I get back I'll have lots of pictures of my thrifting finds to show you (and a camera with which to take those pictures!!)

I'm playing along with Scrappy Jessi, and sharing some of my favorite childhood toys. It was lots of fun trying to remember what my favorites were and then hunting down pictures of them on the internet. Most of these pictures came from ebay, so ladies...our toys are still out there & we can own them again!!! (I don't have any actual pictures of myself with my toys which makes me think that I need to go through some of mom's old pictures!)

My sister & I played Hi-Ho! Cherry-O by the hours.

Everyone had Little Kiddles & the ones in the lockets, too. We had this surf-board one. (I say "we" because this one may have been my sisters, but we played together with a bunch of them, so who really remembers?) But, I remember the sunglasses, bikini swim suit & surf board like it was yesterday.I know that I personally had this exact locket one, though!!Then when we got a little older, Dawn Dolls were popular. They were like Barbies only smaller. I had this one named "Angie." I read that Dawn Dolls were only made for three years - probably quite a collector's item if I had hung onto it!

For some reason I had my share of boy toys (no brothers, so someone had to be the Tomboy).

I had a race track just like this (along with a dump truck & a cap gun.)

Did any of you have a Show and Tell? Wow, they were great!! There was a record and a film strip-like thing that you watched while the record played. I found this great picture on ebay. We had all of those shows...I remember Ali Baba and the 40 Theives & Hiawatha, too!! Lots of fun in the attic watching this with my sisters. I had forgotten all about it until I was searching for pictures of the Viewmaster, but this beats the Viewmaster hands down.My most favorite childhood toy was this Kewpie doll. I carried it everywhere. (This is not my actual doll, although mine was exactly like this...mine is around here somewhere, packed away in a trunk or something...but I found these pictures online.) For some reason my sister was mad at me one day and locked herself into her bedroom and made a HUGE red ink mark on the side of my Kewpie's face. We couldn't get it off and it faded to pink while trying. Let me just say, it was an awful experience.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of the favorite toy posts. I'm sure it will bring back some memories for me!!

Blogaversary!!

Yesterday was the one year mark for this blog!! The year has flown by. I have gotten a lot of new ideas from hopping from blog to blog - all I can say is, WOW! There are so many talented people blogging.

I'd like to give away a little something to celebrate the one year milestone...So - I'm putting together a basket of items - mostly things I've made, including some of my soap. We have an extra season here in Northeastern Wisconsin - "The Muddy Season". It is sort of a parenthesis, stuck somewhere in early spring. BUT...this muddy season should be much more fun. Look at what my mom picked up for me at JoAnn Fabrics!! Who would have guessed...a fabric store?

(Yep, that's me...standing in icy mud in the back yard.)Also, taking the cappuccino machine out of hiding is sure to help matters. :)

A Long Pause

"The secret to a healthy soul is not the discontinuance of hard work but the regularity of a pause."

(Now where did I get that quote? I have it written in my journal, with quotation marks around it, but did not give the proper person credit. I know I read it in a magazine put out by Life Action Ministries.) Anyway...

I have taken a long pause, and am not sure if I am back in full swing yet or not.

I spent 4 days relaxing with my daughter, sister and mom in Wisconsin Dells. Our time was spent mainly reading, relaxing, hot tubbing, and talking. The place we stayed at was very nice, very quiet and peaceful!! It seemed that I was just beginning to unwind and then it was time to leave.

The week after that my family & I travelled to Michigan to see my oldest daughter & her husband. While there, I found out that I am going to be a grandma!!! Very exciting news.

Since my return home and back to the reality of life in general, I've been trying to be diligent in getting some crafting accomplished. I will be in several shows this spring (which has not really arrived here in WI - it is sleeting/raining as I type...hopefully washing away some of the 4 or 5 inches of snow we got the other day) and summer. Here's a look at what I've been working on...

Lots and lots of embellished notebooks and magnet clothespins.

I am adding tags to a nice collection that began when I received some gorgeous ones in a swap.

I need to begin using these on some gifts at some point.

I've really been swamped with much on my plate lately. I feel that this has been a time of real growth and dependence upon the Lord. My prayer is that I use my time wisely and accomplish much so that I may be of better service to Him. It is a constant struggle.

Hosea 10:12 ~ "Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD until He comes and showers righteousness on you."

A Break

It's been a long time since I have posted...

I'm taking a break here - I have a lot of ideas I'm trying to work on and am doing a spring cleaning of the mind, trying to keep the right things in focus. In a few days I will be leaving for nearly a week. My sister, mom, daughter & I will be spending some time at a very nice condo...just a get-away to read, sleep, study, plan...

Hopefully I will accomplish much & be ready to go again when I get back. Wisconsin winters are sooooo long!!

This past weekend my son's basketball team (coached by my husband) won 2nd place in the WACS (WI Assoc. of Christian Schools) State tournament. They had a great season.Notice the poster I made on the wall behind them??

If you have to make posters...you might as well make them sparkle :)

The whole blogging world out there is "thinking Spring." Well, I for one would love to join in...

HOWEVER - when I look outside, this is what I see...I am making progress on my afghan, though!!

Today a group of ladies from our church got together and learned a new craft!! It is called Swedish weaving, and so far...it's lot of fun! When it is finished it will be a large afghan size.It is done on Monks cloth. This weaving design will cover the whole 2 1/2 yards of material when it is finished. I can see that it will be a relaxing thing to do when trying to wind down at night :)

My daughter plans to make an afghan, too. Hopefully she enjoys it too. Her colors are browns & light blues. She hasn't started hers yet. I'll post more pictures when we get farther along. Sorry about the quality of these pics, but it's dark & I don't feel like fixing them up too much...must get back to the weaving!!!
